Smith display and horseshoeing in our restaurant — 1st May

According to our traditions, the first of May should start with standing the May Tree. This tradition which is almost completely forgotten is going to be refreshed in our yard. The tree is going to stand till the end of the month.

During the first of May we offer you and your children a smith display show and horse-shoeing adventure. It is always an exciting moment when the smith puts the smouldering shoe on the upstanding steed. The horseshoe is fuming and spluttering, but the horse does not feel anything, it does not hurt the steed. Before and after this act, the smith shows us how he can form the smouldering, red metal. If you are interested, you can ride a farm-wagon, driven by horses, in Tihany. We also install an archery field where you can try out what you know about this sport. Children can meet and pat our dickeys and goatees, the brave can even ride them.

Cooking slambuc in the village museum yard - 2nd May

Our friend from Szeged, the lutanist Tóni, has decided to prepare a special peasant meal "slambuc" in our yard with Hortobágy shepherd friends in order to get you acquainted with this traditional Hortobágy meal's taste.

Slambuc is a kind of pastry food, which was prepared with bacon while the herd were having the midday rest. Of course, you can find the lyre, violin and even the zither as well, to make the slambuc a real Hungarian experience. At the same time, a beef stew is prepared as well in traditional Hungarian shepherd style. Meanwhile, we prepare scone cakes with cottage cheese and dill or with hose-made jam. Folk songs, shepherd ballads are sung during the meals. You will be impressed by their strong, orotund voice.

Spinning milk-loaf in the village museum yard—3rd May

We would like to start a new tradition with this programme. The challenge in this adventure is going to be the complete 53 meter long milk loaf preparation, in the traditional spinning style. Elderly ladies are going to help us in this programme, as they used to prepare this delicious loaf when they were children. The dough is going to be carried to the yard with a farm wagon, followed with gipsy music, and the women are going to re-knead it in wooden tubbies for the forming. They make the work easier with folksongs, followed with gipsy music and lyre. The spun milk-loaf is going to be divided into meter-pieces and put on baking pans, carried to Alsóörs where the Balaton Bakery Company are going to bake them for us. Then the loaves are going to be carried back to the yard and we can taste them.

Meanwhile, you can try this method as well, and we are going to bake your loaves in our local furnace. These loaves can be tasted with our local hose-made jam prepared by Aunt Bözsi (Elisabeth). The whole programme is going to be loud with the lutanist Tóni's music and the works of our gipsy band. This is something we are sure you are going to be impressed by.

Songs sung, dances danced—4th May

On Sunday afternoon the Hungarian folks music plays the main role with its famous and less known pieces. The Tihany folkdance group is going to perform a nice programme, offering you to take part in it as well. The rascal "Józsi betyár" is going to arrive and puts the women in order with his whip. He beats you or anyone in the crowd, but it is harmless, only very loud because of the end of the rope, but it spins on your wrist blandly and painlessly. The old pal has a lot of tricky games in mind, and is very popular with them, because he moves all your fantasy and logical thinking to find the solutions.
